How Smoking Can Affect Your Smile

A smile is an expression of happiness and one you should be proud to show off. However, challenges such as bad breath, stained teeth, and other gum problems can ruin your smile. For smokers, these problems can quickly become worse, and could make you want to hide your smile. Your oral health is something you should take good care of to maintain a healthy smile!

However, do not let this discourage you from showing off your smile this summer! At Brockville Family Dentistry, we offer several cosmetic dentistry procedures to choose from. With the help of our team at Brockville Family Dentistry are dedicated to helping you achieve the beautiful summer smile you desire with our cosmetic dentistry procedures!

There are a few ways smoking can affect your smile that our team wanted to share. According to the Canadian Dental Association, tobacco can cause gum recession leading to gum disease, bad breath, and teeth staining.

Stained Teeth

Smoking tobacco affects the colour and appearance of your mouth. Heavy and long-term smoking can cause brown-stained teeth, while short-term smoking can cause yellow-stained teeth. If you’re trying to reverse teeth discolouration, Brockville Family Dentistry Office offers hygienic and safe teeth whitening with the help of Dr. Christine Caulford and Dr. Riken Patel. Our team offers cosmetic teeth whitening using Carbamide peroxide, which is one of the best teeth whitening chemicals to give you a pearly, white smile.

Gum Disease

Smoking is a major cause of gum disease. It causes production of bacterial plaque which can cause damage to your gums. If left untreated, gum disease can cause oral health complications, such as severe pain and tooth loss. If you spot symptoms such as red or swollen gums, tender gums, painful chewing, or loose and sensitive teeth, talk to your Brockville Family Dentistry about treatment options for gum disease. You can also restore your smile by maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine that includes brushing for two minutes twice daily, and flossing once daily,

Bad Breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a sign of oral hygiene problems caused by smoking. Nicotine from smoking can hinder the mouth from producing saliva, which exposes it to harmful bacteria leading to tooth decay. If bad breath is making you self-conscious and keeping you from having a beautiful smile, then it’s time to visit our office.

Once summer hits, most of us are often concerned about having the perfect summer body to show off. That said, it is important to note that the perfect summer body isn’t just about looking good but feeling amazing as well. One of the ways you can achieve this is by ensuring that you have the perfect summer smile. Malocclusion (crooked, misaligned teeth) can not only affect our oral health but also takes a toll on our self-confidence.

What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry services can help improve the appearance of your teeth. Your dental structure can affect your facial appearance. By enhancing the appearance of your teeth, you can positively impact your physical appearance as well as your self-confidence!

According to the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association, satisfaction with your dental appearance significantly improves your self-esteem and quality of life. Cosmetic dentistry is thereby a means to an end, the end being a healthier and amazing smile.

Dental Implants

You may be yearning for that perfect summer smile, but the fact that you’re missing one or more teeth makes it impossible to achieve. If you are in this category, then dental implants are the perfect solution for you.

These are artificial tooth crowns and root placements that are designed to replace your missing teeth. They are usually surgically inserted into your jaw bone, thus replacing your lost teeth.

Teeth Whitening

It’s no secret that having discolored teeth can undoubtedly make it difficult for you to smile and laugh in public. Therefore, instead of hiding your smilethis summer, you may want to consider cosmetic teeth whitening.

This procedure removes stains and discoloration from your teeth, significantly brightening your teeth pigmentation. In the competent hands of youBrockville Family Dentistry, you can be certain that your safety will be the number one priority. Our whitening kits contain varying levels of carbamide peroxide- one of the safest teeth whitening chemicals. Therefore, at Brockville Family Dentistry, the teeth whitening process is safe, quick, and extremely reliable.

Dental Veneers

As much as we try our best to live healthy and happy lives, the reality is that accidents happen. Some of these accidents may end up breaking, chipping, or cracking our teeth. Similarly, some of us may have discolored and stained teeth, or maybe you’ve just always been dissatisfied with the shape of your teeth.

If you happen to fall under any of these categories, then you should certainly consider dental veneers. Cosmetic dental veneers are strong, thin shells that are usually bonded to your teeth’s front surface!

What Is Tooth Enamel And How Can You Protect It?

We all know that good dental care is the key to oral health. Protecting tooth enamel will go a long way in keeping your smile bright for years to come. Our Brockville Family Dentistry office can help.

What is Tooth Enamel, and What Harms It?

We hear about tooth enamel all the time, in dental health-related articles and commercials for various dental products. But just what is it?

Tooth enamel is the hard, protective outer layer on your teeth. After eating, sugars and starches begin to produce acids. Those acids eat away at tooth enamel. When the enamel breaks down it allows cavities to form.

Preventing Enamel Breakdown

The best way to protect your teeth is by avoiding or limiting those things that are most likely to destroy the enamel. This includes avoiding sugary foods and carbonated drinks. Shy away from fruit juices, especially citrus as the acidity can compound the problem.

Drink and eat calcium-rich foods instead such as milk, yogurt, cheese, and almonds. Keep heartburn and acid reflux under control. That acidity also breaks down tooth enamel. Do not brush your teeth too hard and wait for 30-60 minutes after eating before you brush.

Protecting Your Enamel with Biannual Dental Examinations and More

Brockville Family Dentistry will help you protect your tooth enamel. Having a routine exam every six months with Dr. Rik or Dr. Caulford will help in keeping your dental health in check. Our dental team may advise you to up the use of fluoride to protect that precious tooth enamel. Toothpaste with fluoride can help, but your Brockville Family Dentistry may recommend additional fluoride treatments for added protection.

If you live in the Brockville Family Dentistry, Ontario area and are looking for a dentist committed to keeping you and your family’s smile healthy and bright, call Brockville Family Dentistry today! Beyond routine preventative care, our dental team offers healthy fluoride treatments and dental sealants along with other cutting-edge treatments for our patients of all ages. Contact our staff, and we will be happy to discuss the dental services we provide.

What To Expect If You Haven’t Been To The Dentist In A While

Whether you are away at school, or raising kids, we know it can be challenging to find time in your schedule to see your dentist. If you haven’t had a check up in a while, not to worry. Although you should strive to see your dentist a few times a year, the first step of re-owning your oral health is to make an appointment and get assessed by a professional. At Brockville Family Dentistry, we want to prepare you for what’s to come with your first visit, to help give you the smile of your dreams!

Time To Clean!

If it’s been some time between your last check-up, you may have a considerable amount of plaque and tartar build up on your teeth. Even for those who brush and floss the daily recommended amount, tartar can only be removed by a professional, which is why seeing your dentist regularly is so important! You can expect a thorough cleaning of each tooth and your gums. This is where one of our dentists will carefully clean the surfaces of your teeth and assess your overall oral health.

If you do not floss regularly, gum bleeding may occur, and it is completely normal. Periodontal disease affects 7/10 Canadians and is normally the cause for this. If you experienced gum bleeding this time, try flossing at least once a day before brushing your teeth and see the difference it makes for your next visit!

Oral Exam And More

Depending on your needs, a comprehensive oral exam and dental x-rays will likely be recommended. This is so we can assess you for cavities, and make sure no tooth gets left behind! We will be able to tell which teeth have already developed cavities and which ones are showing early warning signs. From here, we can create a plan and start treating the impacted teeth. During your oral exam, we will  look for abnormalities such as white patches, which can be a sign for oral cancer. Your oral health is strongly connected to your overall health, so come see us as soon as you can!

Why Should I Floss?

How many times has your dentist or dental hygienist asked you if you floss? Although a key factor in maintaining oral health, this important step is often overlooked! Whether you find it tedious, or you just haven’t put that much thought into it, we want to convince you to make flossing a part of your daily routine!

Your Mouth Will Thank You!

Although your toothbrush does a great job, it can’t reach all areas of your mouth. When you skip flossing, you are missing out on cleaning more than one-third of your tooth’s surface. Within 24 to 46 hours, that lingering plaque hardens on our teeth and turns into tartar, which can only be removed by a professional cleaning. Over time, you’ll be at risk of not only developing cavities and bad breath, but also gum disease

The Proper Flossing Technique

Take a generous amount of floss and wrap it around your index and middle fingers, leaving about two inches of space in between. Slide the floss between your teeth, wrap it into a “C” around the base of your tooth, and gently move it under the gumline. Repeat this process two to three times per tooth, and make sure to use new floss for every use! Once you are done, make sure you throw the floss out and never flush it down the toilet. You should brush your teeth after flossing, as all the particles in your mouth are much looser, making it easier for your toothbrush to clean!

Don’t be alarmed if you experience minor bleeding as a new flosser! Not only is this totally normal, but it’s just your gums becoming stronger. If you notice your bleeding longer than a few days, give us a call so we can assess the situation!

Spring Cleaning Dental Care Tips

The weather is finally getting warmer, and it’s time to carry out some thorough spring cleaning. While refreshing your home this season, it’s a good idea to remember your oral hygiene too. At Brockville Family Dentistry, we want you to keep your oral hygiene as a top priority, so you can maintain your bright white smile. Here are some spring cleaning dental care tips you should note:

Replace Your Toothbrush

We recommend looking at the state of your toothbrush this spring. The Canadian Dental Association recommends changing your toothbrush every three months. If you notice that your toothbrush’s bristles are frayed before the three months are over, the toothbrush should be replaced. Our dentists always recommend using a soft brush, with rounded bristles. A toothbrush in good condition will clean your teeth properly and keep them in good condition.

Check Mouthwash and Toothpaste Expiration Dates

It is important to remember that your dental care products have an expiration date. Thus, take a look at your mouthwash and toothpaste and dispose of the products that have already expired. Using expired products will do more harm to your teeth than good.

Brush and Floss Regularly

If you ever forget to floss or brush in the morning before going out, spring is the time to get serious about your oral health habits. Proper flossing and brushing will keep your teeth pearly white and prevent tooth decay. We recommend brushing twice a day for at least two minutes each time and flossing at least once a day.

Whitening and Brightening

Spring is the time to get the smile you’ve always wanted. As professional dentists in Brockville Family Dentistry, we know how to whiten your teeth, and consequently increase your smile power. If you don’t want to wait for months to see results with home whitening kits, you can take advantage of our whitening services and get results instantly!

Biannual Dental Exams

To maintain optimal oral health, we recommend visiting our dental office at least twice annually for dental exams and cleanings. They will examine and clean your teeth professionally to keep them healthy and esthetically pleasing. Professional dentists will polish stains away and remove any tartar buildup. Biannual appointments also allow you to ask your dentist about any concerns, and get custom advice on your daily cleaning routine.

Five Helpful Tips To Keep Your Family’s Smiles Healthy

If you are reading oral health tips online, it’s likely you already know the importance of dental care. You most likely already know the basics: Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day, hydrate, eat healthy snacks, etc. However, dental health professionals are always learning new things about our oral health. There’s always new research coming out with new ways to protect, care and heal our gums and teeth.

Our team at Brockville Family Dentistry has put together this blog so you can know the top five things to ensure your family’s oral health.

1- Dentalcare should start early

Approximately 50% of all children enter kindergarten with tooth decay, according to CDC’s State of Oral Health in Canada report. Most of these oral problems start soon after dental eruption, and may progress quickly. Combined efforts, including dental hygiene, early dental visits and timely risk assessment are essential in reducing the risk of tooth decay for your child.

2- Develop a routine for oral health care

Ensure that everyone in the family gets into the habit of brushing and flossing at least twice every day. Brushing gets rid of leftover food particles that cause tooth decay. Flossing removes plaque from places that your toothbrush can’t reach. Our team recommends using fluoride toothpaste, as it helps strengthen tooth enamel. You can also rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash to lower the bacteria in your mouth.

3- Address dental concerns sooner than later

Dental concerns only get worse the longer they’re left untreated. Minor dental concerns like cavities and chips can lead to severe issues, such as tooth loss or nerve exposure. It is always a good idea to have a dental professional evaluate and address any dental concern. As Dr. Riken Patel — a dental surgeon at Brockville Family Dentistry — always says, getting timely help will save you from needing more costly or invasive procedures later on.

4- Schedule dental appointments every six months

Don’t just book your appointment with a Brockville Family Dentistry when something is off. You should always go for your regular examinations. Your dental hygienist and dentist are trained to check for problems that you might not feel or see on your own. Some things like gum disease or cavities aren’t painful or visible until they become more advanced. When it comes to oral cancer, hygienists and dentists are often the first to find it for many patients. You can also take advantage of these visits to have your teeth professionally cleaned.

5- Find the right dentist for your family in Brockville Family Dentistry

It’s important to find one dental office for your family and continue going to them every six months. It’s easier and more convenient when your entire family gets their teeth checked in the same place. Plus one it’s easier for our dentist’s to keep track of oral development!

At Brockville Family Dentistry, we provide preventative care, fluoride treatment, dental sealants, and other cutting edge treatments to keep your family’s oral health in check. Our staff would be happy to discuss any of the services we provide! Contact us today!

Tips For A Healthy 2021!

If there’s one resolution you should make in 2021, it’s taking good care of your teeth! However, many people have no idea where to start when it comes to their oral health. With the three tips below, you should be able to complete this new year with a healthy, bright and white smile!

Follow the Recommended Oral Hygiene Routine

The New Year presents an opportunity for you to change your habits, including how you take care of your teeth. Our team at Brockville Family Dentistry that you go back to the basics, which include:

  • Brushing your teeth more than twice a day.
  • Ensuring you brush your teeth properly (take time and move the brush gently in circular motions) every time you do it.
  • Using fluoride toothpaste when brushing your teeth.
  • Flossing at least once a day to reduce plaque, improve gum health, and lower inflammation.
  • Maintaining good oral health with regular mouthwash (which reaches hard-to-brush areas, introduces useful minerals, and neutralizes mouth acid).
  • Drinking plenty of water in between brushing sessions.
  • Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables with lots of nutrients and fibre.
  • Consuming less acidic (they cause cavities) and sugary (easily converts into acids) foods.

Healthy Snacks For 2021

One way you can improve your dental health is to choose healthy snacks. The problem is that sugary foods are available almost everywhere you turn. But you don’t have to always fall prey to your cravings and appetite. Here are some healthy snacks you can prepare for 2021:

  • Diced fruit with yogurt.
  • Homemade bread or muffins with milk.
  • Whole-grain bread with hummus or cheese.
  • Fruit with milk or cheese.
  • Unsweetened cereal with fresh fruit toppings.

How Our Dental Clinic Can Help

A dental clinic can help you maintain good oral health by spotting issues long before they arise. The dentist’s work involves taking an in-depth look at your teeth, spotting problems, and recommending remedies. Since you are unlikely to be cleaning your teeth adequately, a dentist will complement your efforts. You will be able to maintain proper oral hygiene throughout the year. As we had recommended earlier, ensure you visit a dentist two or more times a year.

Call us or visit us at our Brockville Family Dentistry for preventative care, dental sealants, fluoride treatment, and other cutting-edge treatments to keep you smiling in 2021. Our staff would be happy to discuss any of the services we provide! Contact us today!

First Dentist Visit in Years? Don’t Panic!

At Brockville Family Dentistry, we see a wide variety of patients. Some of which have been unable to visit the dentist for some time. But that is OKAY! We pride ourselves on providing a no judgment zone and our primary concern is making you feel relaxed and comfortable. What you need to avoid is letting fear delay you further! So if you’re one of the many people who hasn’t seen the dentist in a while, here’s a few tips on what to expect:

Communication Is Key

Open communication is key! When making your appointment, feel free to ask our staff any questions you’d like. When you arrive, it’s okay to tell the staff that you’re nervous! We’ll do our best to assuage your fears and help you feel calm.

We’ll Help Clean Up!

A dental hygienist will give your teeth a thorough and probably well-needed cleaning. If there’s a lot of tartar buildup, this may involve scraping. It may take a while, but it’s definitely worth it for your smile.

There May Be Some Bleeding

Gums may bleed during cleaning. This does not necessarily indicate a problem, it could be that your gums aren’t accustomed to the pressure of a professional cleaning. Flossing and brushing during the days before your visit can help make this easier.

We’ll Look Underneath The Surface

Our eyes can only see so much. X-rays are a valuable tool to aid in the diagnosis of potential cavities, infections or other pathologies. Dental appointments may consist of a series of x-rays specific to your needs.

We Want To See You Again!

Good oral health is crucial to overall good health, and regular dental appointments are necessary to achieve this. Brockville Family Dentistry can help keep your smile bright with regular appointments! You’ll love your new smile! Remember, there’s no need to fear. We can provide you with a new, healthier oral care regimen. We provide preventative care, fluoride treatment, dental sealants, and other cutting edge treatments to keep you happy with your smile.
